The prestigious Villa Carafa di Belvedere
Villa Carafa di Belvedere in Naples is the prestigious and evocative historic villa near which the CasA CarafA holiday residence is located.
The Vandeneynden palace was built as an “out of town” palace between 1671 and 1673 on the western slope of the Vomero hill, now Via Belvedere, at the end of a long tree-lined avenue, with an entrance onto the “via del Vomero”, in a panoramic position. facing the hill of Posillipo.
Built by the Flemish merchant and banker Ferdinando Vandeneynden, Marquis of Castelnuovo, the palace becomes Villa Carafa di Belvedere in 1688 when Elisabetta, daughter of the Marquis Vandeneynden, marries Carlo Carafa IV, Prince of Belvedere.
The Carafa transformed it into a grandiose residence opened by loggias overlooking the panorama of the gulf, giving substance to the name of the family “Belvedere”.
The villa was very popular with the high Neapolitan society and the Bourbons themselves; during the summer stays of Queen Maria Carolina of Hapsburg, wife of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, magnificent parties were organized that attracted enormous crowds.
With the French domination it was one of the favorite places of Gioacchino Murat.
Precious collections of paintings and sculptures were kept inside the villa; the walls are still embellished with frescoes by authors such as Luca Giordano.
